It's letter writing week at ICS! Abbie has spent the night writing 10 letters to friends and teachers. She's so excited to get mail, and she's just as excited to do the writing! It's such a great program to motivate young writers across the school while, at the same time, teaching second graders about the mail delivery system!
How it works:
There is a big mailbox on campus, right outside the principal's office. Students from preschool to grade 5 can write letters to anyone they want in the primary school: administration, teachers, friends, etc. They need to put the letter in an envelope and address it with the person's name, classroom name, and room number. Then, they put their information on the back -- a return address. Letters are deposited in the bright yellow mailbox, and once a day, a second grade class gathers all the letters before morning recess and then runs around the school delivering the letters. They learn about sorting mail and the delivery process. If the letter isn't addressed correctly, it either gets "returned to sender" or it goes to dead mail (no good address or return address).
After this unit, Abbie should have a better idea of the UPS driver's job. Maybe she'll finally understand that he isn't a Santa Claus like figure, regularly bringing us presents! Gosh, I miss my UPS guy, and, more importantly the ability to easily order cheap stuff online!
